Featuring Francois Corneloup on soprano & bari sax, Marc Ducret on guitar and Martin France on drums. Francois Corneloup has collaborated with Louis Sclavis, Michel Godard and Francois Raulin and recorded for labels like Hatology, Nato and Clean Feed. Marc Ducret never ceases to amaze us with his distinctive and inventive guitar playing, whether working with Tim Berne in Big Satan or doing his own solo and trio discs. British drummer, Martin France, has been recorded on some 50+ discs and has worked with Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor. Not a bad resume. With similar instrumentation to Tim Berne’s Big Satan, there are some similarities in sound but not their approach. "Jardin de Pierres" is a rather Big Satan-like with the dark, repeating rock riff at the beginning, then quieting down before it builds up again with a smoking baritone solo. There is a superb balance of ideas between Francois’ bari sax and Marc’s guitar on "Lagune", as Francois takes another inspired solo, Marc plays lines of riffs underneath that add both harmonic colors and rhythmic ideas that lock n with the drummer. In the middle of the tune the trio stop and then build it up once again until Francois takes a calming unaccompanied bari solo that winds down to a lovely ending. "L’Ombre d’un Chant" is another exquisite, spacious piece with lovely harmonies for the baritone sax and guitar and minimal percussion. The title track, "Ulm" is a great explosive work for eerie sustained guitar, percussive bari sax underneath and tight, powerful drums kicking it into high gear. I dig the way "Liquides Precieux" has two slow interlocking patterns that circle each other, yet remain tightly connected. The trio is slightly out-of-sink, yet the sax and guitar solo at the same time around one another, moving in waves, building to a grand conclusion. Finally, "Nocturne" has Marc playing a slightly bent chord over and over as the bari sax plays lush, restrained harmonies in spurts. Powerful medicine, that we can all use. - BLG downtown music gallery.

Featuring Pascal Contet on accordion, Bruno Chevillon on contrabass and Francois Corneloup on soprano and baritone saxes. Contrabassist extraordinaire, Bruno Chevillon, is without a doubt one of the finest bassists in Europe and has consistently floored me the few times I’ve heard him with Louis Sclavis, Marc Ducret, Daniel Humair and Jean Derome. I just heard saxist Francois Corneloup on the above-mentioned trio disc with Marc Ducret and Martin France and he is another fine French musician who shouldn’t be ignored. I hadn’t heard of Pascal Contet before this disc, however he does have a duo disc out with Joelle Leandre and has worked with Jean- Pierre Drouet, Andy Emler & Vinko Globokar. He appears to be more known for his work performing modern classical compositions. With a resume like the one above, I was more than intrigued. From the opening notes of "Toujours Effeuree", Bruno is tapping out harmonics on his bass, producing sounds that only he can make, as Francois twists his notes and Pascal presents eerie drones on his accordion. Although all of this is improvised, it is completely focused and fascinating throughout. As Pascal stretches his notes out slowly magically on "Le Chemin des Dames", Bruno provides a deep melodic undertow. Francois’ bari sax also answers that haunting melody with some somber reflections, hushed and quietly enchanting. The rich, warm textures of baritone sax, contrabass and accordion sound superb together since they come form a similar tonal range and enhance each other’s sound as they work as one connected force. This is one of those special sessions that goes way beyond the expectations of mere improvisations and into the realm of those magic-making masters. - BLG. downtown music gallery.

Featuring Andy Emler on piano, Claude Tchamitchian on contrabass and Eric Echampard on drums. This another fine French trio, the only musician here that I am previously familiar with is their drummer, Eric Echampard, who plays in Marc Ducret’s current trio, with three discs out as of now. Although I had not heard of Andy Emler before this, he has collaborated with Michel Portal, Daniel Humair and Marc Ducret and has discs out on Label Bleu. Bassist, Claude Tchamitchian has worked with Jimmy Giuffre, Joe McPhee and Linda Sharrock, as well as with a variety of fine French players. He co-founds the French label Emouvance. This disc was recorded live in the studio in November of 2005 and it sounds mostly improvised. The opening piece is short and quite mysterious with ghost-like sounds floating amongst the bowed bass and minimal percussion and piano sounds. "Quelque Chose a Dire" also begins with suspense-filled bowed bass, harp-like piano and sublime cymbal work. This piece was written by Emler and is an elegant work with a lovely, melancholy melody and superb bowed bass, rather ECM-like in sound. "L’Hiver Sans Froid" features some sparse, elegant playing, that drifts like the wind in the first half and becomes more lush and ballad-like. It is difficult to tell which pieces are completely improvised since they often have sections of what sounds like more charted terrain, especially when the piano and drums lock into these tight-knit changes. This is one of the most elegant trio offerings we’ve heard in a while that wouldn’t sound out-of-place on ECM. - BLG downtown music gallery.
